In this work we aimed to use examples from various fields (physics, medicine and structural biology) and several mathematical libraries for Java (COLT and JLAPACK) to demonstrate the advantages of scientific computing using Java. We also compared the runtimes of different Java compilers (Sun, IBM and Blackdown) and found that IBM's Java compiler results in the smallest CPU time. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
