A web‐based problem‐solving environment designed to teach assembly line balancing was developed based on analytic and simulation models. This environment was evaluated by 67 undergraduate students. Differences between pre‐ and post‐test scores were significant ( α  = 0.05) and students felt that the system helped them to visualize line balancing concepts. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
