Informational society needs major changes in the educational programs, being necessary to prepare teachers from all fields, in such way to use the information technologies in computer assisted learning. The computer, as auxiliary element of the teacher, is used since few decades, but the new technologies appeared in computer science lead to the necessity to adapt the learning/teaching methodologies in such way to be based increasingly on information technology. This paper presents a software package, which can be used as educational software, for study the power electronics. This study deals with the simulation of power electronic circuits by using PSCAD EMTDC software. Since the equations and functions can be represented in blocks, simulation method is simple and versatile. The PSCAD models of single and three‐phase rectifiers, PWM choppers and inverters, AC choppers, are developed and performance waveforms are obtained. This study would be useful for obtaining a quick solution for, power electronic networks and for more complex systems containing power electronic circuits. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
