Deep to the extensor expansion of the interphalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints of the toes, there exists a structure of dense irregular connective tissue that corresponds to the opposite volar plate. This plate is a constant finding, is meniscoid, and challenges previous descriptions of the anatomy and function of these joints. © 1994 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
