The present paper proposes a selective antermodial approach to the third cervical vertebra, based on the topographic and stratigraphic anatomy of the carotid regions. The study was performed on 12 subjects and involved 20 observations. The investigations showed the existence of an “access window” limited in one direction by the external carotid artery and pharynx, and in the other direction, by the superior thyroid artery and the hypoglossal nerve. The steps that precede the follows this crucial step of the approach are presented in a stratigraphic order from superficial to deep. © 1992 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
