To assist federal, state and local government officials responsible for developing and enforcing legislation and regulation of Biotechnology research and engineering, this paper has been prepared by the Biotechnology Task Force of the Government Programs Steering Committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). AIChE is the technical and professional organization for engineers in the United States. Its 60,000 members are active in academia, government, consulting and a broad spectrum of chemical processing industries and are dedicated to providing expertise in the application of chemistry and chemical engineering principles and fundamentals to problem solving.
