The Information Systems (IS) discipline lacks a paradigm to guide its work. A metasystemic approach is taken to explore a metatheory with potential to develop into a paradigm for the discipline. Sources of knowledge, the object of study, representative metaphors, activities, methodologies, and purposes of the schools of thought which constitute the discipline are reviewed and discussed in an effort to define the paradigm.
