This article deals with decision making in small human groups that share renewable resources. It describes a computer‐controlled laboratory that was developed to study factors that influence group members' decisions about resource uses in situations which may lead to the so‐called “tragedy of the commons,” in which common resources are depleted unless all users exercise self‐restraint. Simular situations can arise in organizations, societies, and supranational systems.
