This paper aims at formal explication of the concepts of monopolization and alienation as they occur in science, a system at the organization level. The salient feature which distinguishes the situation in science from that occurring elsewhere is the constant growth of inadequacy of the assignment of scientists to positions, due to growth of scientific authority of individual scientists. The paper suggests a measure of alienation based on perception of the difference between what occurs and the expectation of what would be appropriate in given circumstances. Some empirically testable hypotheses about monopolization and alienation are given.
