Abstract The present study proposed that the political convention situation in which one candidate has dictatorial control over the nomination (dictator situation) is not as psychologically uninteresting as it has appeared in previous research. The contact phase of the coalition formation process in three triadic dictator situations was examined. Some support for the prediction that strategy selection would be a function of the level of vote commitment was indicated. In addition, the data suggested that further examination of the dictator situation is warranted.
