Abstract The formalization of the basic elements of ideological systems has been hampered by a plethora of conflicting definitions. By the logical indexing of basic variables in the scientific study of ideas of a cluster type (ideology, propaganda, utopia, etc.), certain definite lines of inquiry into the psychology and sociology of mass communications and public opinion can be more readily undertaken. In this article, pattern‐variables are fused to idealtypologies in the comparison of ideological and utopian formations.
