Often scientists talk about the same things with different vocabularies and from different points of view. To simplify common patterns of analysis used in the study of groups, this author presents a scheme for conceptualizing the basic variables in such research on face‐to‐face social interaction. Major dimensions of observed behavior are delineated under the headings of form and content of interaction for both personal and interpersonal behavior. This analysis is suggested as a framework for organizing ideas in this area of research.
