Like the astronomer who studies “messages” emanating from heavenly bodies or the geologist who studies “messages” recorded in the rocks, the investigator of mind also is concerned with messages, namely those which indicate how possessors of minds decipher the messages they receive. The function of mind becomes, then, for the scientist a deciphering activity of certain classes of living beings. The dilemma of mind‐body “dualism” seems to disappear in this context.
