This article will present a personal view of metabolic profiling by mass spectrometry, predominantly gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)—its strengths and its weaknesses, its needs and its wants, and how it might best be used and, perhaps, how it should not. This will be my own perspective on this subject—if it seems narrow of scope it will be so because it has become difficult to be a successful ‘Jack‐of‐all‐trades’ in this business.
