Different soft introduction and ionization methods, including fast atom bombardment, particle beam chemical ionization, thermospray and direct liquid introduction (DLI) have been compared for the analysis of thermorubin, a thermally labile antibiotic of molecular weight 600. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing thermally induced processes, which may complicate the interpretation of liquid chromatographic mass spectra of synthetic derivatives: the study draws in particular on results of DLI negative ion experiments on thermorubin and related compounds.
