The MI and CA spectra of selected positive and negative ions generated by fast atom bombardment (FAB) of the stereoisomeric aldohexoses can be used to differentiate among these isomers, without prior derivatization or addition of other substances. The main fragmentation routes were traced and compared to those of some 2‐ and 6‐deoxyaldohexoses, which appeared to be suitable model compounds. In both positive and negative ion FAB mass spectrometry, the OH group at the C‐2 position plays an important role in the fragmentation reactions of the pseudomolecular [M + glycerol + H] + and [M – H] − ions.
