The positive and negative ion fast atom bombardment mass spectra of methyl α‐D‐galactopyranoside 2‐, 3‐, 4‐ and 6‐(sodium sulphate) cannot be used for differentiation among the various positional isomers. The metastable ion and collisional activation spectra of the [M + Na] + as well as the [M – Na] − and [M – H] − ions, however, allow an easy determination of the position of the sulphate group.
