A simple preparation for the synthesis of ( 2 H 9 )trimethylanilinium hydroxide is detailed. The utility of this deuterated ‘on column’ permethylation reagent for the preparation of volatile derivatives of nucleosides for gas chromatographic mass spectrometric analysis is described.
