The mass spectra and fragmentations of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of ethylmalonic acid and two deuterium labelled analogues are reported. The proposed fragmentation scheme is supported by the low resolution spectra and metastable transitions for the labelled and unlabelled derivatives and by the high resolution spectrum for the unlabelled derivative. An unusual elimination of non‐TMS methyl radical from both the molecular ion and a fragment ion is demonstrated.
