The mass spectra of a number of synthetic cyclopenta[ a ]phenanthrenes are described, and identitication of an in vitro metabolite of a carcinogen of this series is reported. The correlation of the mass spectra of the major urinary metabolite, its dehydration product and its triacetate with the structure assigned to the metabolite is described.
