The mass spectroscopic behaviour of the methyl ester of prostaglandins E 1 and E 2 has been studied with the aid of low eV spectra, measurements on metastable ion decompositions and high resolution mass measurements. Mechanisms are proposed for the formation of the majority of the abundant fragment ions of these biologically important compounds. The mass spectra of free acids are also discussed.
