Abstract The field desorption mass spectra of eight rifamycins were obtained and compared with their electron impact mass spectra. All the compounds gave abundant molecular or quasimolecular ions, while no significant fragmentation was observed in the low mass region of the spectra. Therefore, field desorption mass spectrometry has been shown to be of great importance for the determination of the molecular weight of these antibiotics.
