A sensitive analytical method involving isotope dilution analysis with multilabeled standards and using field ionization mass spectrometry has been developed for the determination of methaqualone and its metabolie, 6‐hydroxymethaqualone, in urine. The limit of sensitivity measured with urine samples is 200 pg/ml for the two compounds. Analysis of urines collected over 11 days following ingestion of a single 250 mg tablet of Mandrax™ by a human subject indicates that the slow phase of excretion of the two compounds has a half‐life approximately 50 h long.
