Several slightly volatile or nonvolatile organic compounds were transformed directly in the solid sample inlet system into more volatile compounds by addition of an appropriate reagent to the sample. In this way, in several instances free organic acids could be obtained from their salts. A similar method was used to transform some amino acids into derivatives of diketopiperazine or of phthalic acid.
