The mass spectroscopic behaviour of prostaglandin A 1 and its methyl ester has been studied. Mechanisms are suggested for the majority of fragmentation processes occurring in the spectra of these compounds. The proposed mechanisms have been confirmed by low electron voltage spectra, measurements on metastable ion decompositions, high resolution mass measurements and deuterium labelling.
