A relatively simple and inexpensive anaerobic calorimeter was designed and evaluated by using a Hy‐Cal Engineering BI‐7 bidirectional heat‐flux sensor to measure heat output from magnetically stirred I‐L flask fermentations. The production of ethanol and cumulative heat output by Zymomonas mobilis were both linearly proportional to glucose concentrations up to 160 g/L.
