The rationale for efficient light absorption by algae at a production unit is given and design details of an intensive thin‐layer technology outdoor (2.11 m 2 ) unit are presented. Data on productivity under extreme conditions were collected. Maximum productivity data are close to those reported in the literature for similar geographic areas.
