The outcome of the interaction of two commensal populations growing in a continuous bioreactor depends on the operating conditions (dilution rate and feed concentration) and the shape and mutual disposition of the specific growth rate curves of the two populations. The stability of the possible steady states is analyzed by a new method based on the Poincaré index and a comprehensive portrait of the dynamics of the interaction of commensalism is presented. Potential operating difficulties and associated control problems are discussed.
