Abstract Ultraviolet absorption and circular dichroism spectra of azlactones derived from N ‐acetoacetyl amino acids are examined. A number of model compounds of the isomeric forms possibly present in the equilibrium mixtures of these azlactones have also been prepared and their spectral properties compared. The reported data permit, structural and stereochemical assignments on these amide compounds.
