The irreversible kinetics of polypeptide denaturation and renaturation is discussed in terms of the Zimm‐Bragg equilibrium model. An exact solution is presented for situations in which the back reaction is negligible. The solution is given in terms of parameters which are rate constants for the elementary processes in denaturation or renaturation. The formalism is also applicable to reactions of linear polymers in which the reactivity of a given site depends on the state of reaction of its neighbors.
