We have carried out a detailed study of ligand binding of ferrihemoglobins under various conditions. Our results show that n varies with time and that this variation is paralleled by changes in the spectrum of methemoglobin. This suggests some form of structural perturbation. The time‐dependent value of n is discussed in terms of the observed spectral changes accompanying prolonged equilibration.
