Form dichroism has been predicted to make an important contribution to the dichroic spectra of rod‐shaped macromolecules. Ultraviolet flow dichroism experiments on tobacco mosaic virus and bacteriophage fd in solvents of different refractive indices were unable to detect the phenomenon, indicating that for these viruses form dichroism is much less important than had been postulated.
