Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as excellent solvents for various biological applications. However, their toxicological assessments are still challenging. The use of microorganisms to evaluate IL toxicity provides many advantages over other conventional methods. This mini review presents the recent research progress on the toxicological properties of ILs towards microorganisms and their enzymes and highlights the computational prediction of various toxicity models.
