Biological hydrogen production is a promising alternative with significant advantages over conventional petroleum‐derived chemical processes. Microbial consortia provide distinct advantages over pure cultures for their higher productivities, robustness to environmental stresses, and diverse metabolic and genetic pools. Synthetic consortia are designed and engineered in a rational manner, in which microbial cell factories exchange their essential metabolites to achieve an enhanced hydrogen production. This is reported by Shaojie Wang, Ting Zhang, Meidan Bao, Haijia Su, and Ping Xu in article 1900297.
