The direct shikimate kinase‐catalyzed route to the key metabolite shikimate‐3‐phosphate is the method of choice and superior to any other routes, which have the disadvantages of tedious multi‐step synthesis, costly or commercially unavailable starting materials, use of toxic heavy metal reagents and tedious work up procedures due to side products. The cover shows the 31P‐NMR reaction monitoring of a one‐step enzymatic phosphorylation of shikimate in the 3‐position (red) in comparison with the multiple reaction steps of two chemical synthesis routes to shikimate‐3‐phosphate. This is reported by Bernhard Schoenenberger, Agata Wszolek, Roland Meier, Henrike Brundiek, Markus Obkircher, and Roland Wohlgemuth in article number 1700529 .
