In the last 30 years Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells have been developed into highly efficient cell factories. In this time optimization evolved from random approaches and screening towards systems and synthetic biology strategies. Rational modifications on a genomic, transcriptomic and glycomic level, enhancement of signaling pathways or optimization of promoter design increased cell specific productivity and product quality. Cover page prepared by Nadiya Romanova and Thomas Noll, authors of the article “Engineered and Natural Promoters and Chromatin‐Modifying Elements for Recombinant Protein Expression in CHO Cells”, article number 1700232 .
