Transformations of distributions belong to the standard repertoire of theoretical statistics, if they are given as explicit, algebraic functions. In practical applications, transformations are often not given explicitly, however, but as processes that are best described as solutions of ordinary differential equations. The paper describes how trends in distributions can be computed under such conditions. It begins with a description of the method, illustrates it with didactic examples, and applies the method to the accumulation of mercury in king mackerel ( Scomberomorus cavalla ). A brief discussion alludes to limitations and to other potential application areas.
