A model selection criterion for log‐linear models with orthonormal basis for contingency tables is developed using the Gauss discrepancy between the logarithms of the frequencies. The contribution of each parameter to the criterion may be determined separately. A test for the hypothesis that the use of a certain parameter increases the expected discrepancy is given.
