The procedure of determining the optimum sample size in each stratum in stratified sampling for several variables is expressed and solved as a multistage decision process through dynamic programming. Using data published elsewhere, the dynamic programming approach was shown to give results identical to those obtained by some other already suggested approaches. The advantage is that dynamic programming can more easily handle problems involving several strata and/or variables.
