Hühn's notion of optimal sample size for the χ 2 goodness of fit test is discussed. It involves minimising the achievable level of the test subject to a given nominal level. This ignores the power of the competing tests and can lead to an ‘optimal’ test that is uniformly less powerful than all the competing tests considered.
