Abstract Invited comment on Alonzo, T. A. and Nakas, C. T. (2007). Comparison of ROC umbrella volumes with an application to the assessment of lung cancer diagnostic markers. Biometrical Journal 49 , 654–664. The umbrella volume, proposed as a parameter for diagnostic validity in a specific three group situation might be difficult to interpret in clinical applications. It should be used very cautiously. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
