The paper deals with the optimal Bayes discriminant rule for qualitative variables. The performance of variable selection is investigated under strong assumptions like the restriction to dichotomous variables, which are assumed to be independent or dependent with fixed dependence structure, and all parameters known. Differences in comparison with normal variables in linear discriminant analysis can be shown. This is a further reason for applying special methods of discriminant analysis in the case of qualitative variables.
