A simple and operationally convenient approximation is proposed for the Bayes optimal multistage design within the Colton decision‐theoretic model for the comparison of two medical treatments. The two‐ and three‐stage designs are developed in full; the latter is found to be superior to several existing designs including some involving sequential adaptive sampling.
