As the name already suggests, poly(A)‐binding proteins (PABPs) bind to the poly(A) tail of mRNAs. They not only act as scaffold proteins by recruiting various other regulators, but they also mediate mRNA metabolism. In article 2000335 Long‐Wen Zhao and Heng‐Yu Fan take a look at these important proteins during gametogenesis and early embryogenesis. Because transcriptional activity is limited during these vital developmental processes, PABPs fulfill very distinct roles that may differ from their canonical roles. The authors discuss these roles as well novel PABP family members that are specifically present in germ cells.
