More than one year into the COVID‐19 pandemic, the long‐term health consequences for individual patients are still not fully understood. However, it has become clear that some of the patients continue to suffer from lingering symptoms (“long COVID‐19”). In article 2000331 Geetanjali Saini and Ritu Aneja speculate that an increased susceptibility to cancer might be another consequence of a SARSCoV‐2 infection. The authors base their hypothesis on growing evidence that SARS‐CoV‐2 has the ability to modulate oncogenic pathways, promote chronic low‐grade inflammation and cause tissue damage.
