The perirhinal cortex (PC) and the entorhinal cortex (EC) are two brain regions important for memory. These two regions form a functionally coupled system, but there is still little information on how and where their interaction is controlled. In article 2000084, Riichi Kajiwara and Takashi Tominaga hypothesize that the deep layers of the PC area 35 play a crucial role in the gating of the propagation of neural excitation from the PC to the EC. By using voltage‐sensitive dye imaging of rodent brain slices the authors discuss the implications of this finding and the novel gating mechanism.
