Chromatin SUMO in stress . In article 1600263 , Einari A. Niskanen and Jorma J. Palvimo ponder the role of chromatin SUMOylation in cell stress. Post‐translational modification of chromatin proteins with SUMOs, small ubiquitin‐like modifier proteins, responds to various harsh stress conditions. However, the function of this SUMO stress response is not known. The cover schematizes their hypothesis that as reactions to cell stress, decreased SUMOylation of chromatin anchor regions and increased SUMOylation in promoter regions regulate chromatin structural changes and RNA polymerase II pausing, respectively.
