Progress in the structural biology of the insulin/receptor complex. On pages 389–397, De Meyts reviews the recent literature on the structure of the complex of insulin with the primary binding site (site 1) of its receptor, and puts it in perspective relative to previous structural and biochemical evidence accumulated over several decades. The implications for negative cooperativity in binding and receptor kinase activation are discussed. The image shows a detailed view of insulin's binding sites 1 (in magenta) and site 2 residues (in red) in the ternary complex between insulin, L1 and CT. Insulin's A chain is in lilac, B chain in yellow. Drawing by Marek Brzozowski using the CCP4MG programme. PDB file: 4OGA.
