Early eye development: Formation of the optic cup. Eye development is a complex process involving evagination and invagination processes of the retinal epithelium to form a double‐walled cup structure. On pages 17–25 Eiraku et al. introduce a new model explaining the tissue dynamics that enable the spontaneous invagination of the neural retina. This “relaxation‐expansion” model involves the following consecutive local rules: relaxation in the neural retina, apical constriction at the boundary epithelium between the neural retina and retinal pigment epithelium domains (hinge) and tangential expansion in the neural retina.
