The paper discusses what lay behind the successes of the Bavarian Academy of Science, which was established in 1759. To this end the academic day‐to‐day operations during the first five decades of its existence are being analyzed in four different fields of activity (academia, popularization, distribution of natural knowledge, expertise). It is shown that the academy with its skills und competences operated in several geographical areas and social spaces and acted as advisor for governmental institutions. The Academy established itself as an important institution for collecting, popularizing, and distributing natural knowledge in the residential city of Munich as well in the Bavarian state and took part in the modernization process in Bavaria. It was a transformative institution.
